When Pigs Glow…

Taiwan has successfully bred fluorescent green pigs that researchers hope will boost the island’s stem cell research. Researchers at National Taiwan University injected fluorescent green protein into embryonic pigs and bred three male transgenic pigs. Although partially fluorescent green pigs exist elsewhere, these pigs in Taiwan are the only ones in the world that are green from inside out - even their hearts and internal organs are green.

Transgenic pigs are used to study human diseases and can help researchers monitor and trace changes of tissue during physical development. The country also produced the world’s first transgenic glowing fish.
